Thank you Nancy. Thank you Shirley. Thank you for your hunger for knowledge. For your brilliance. And an exceptionally deep thanks for generosity in sharing and inspiring.

My baking obsession has been once again been roused and it is due to these two phenomenal ladies. The siren’s call to the oven first began about two weeks ago with an article in the LA Times Food.  Nancy Silverton, one of LA’s restaurant matriarchs, shared her focaccia insights with one and all.

LA’s bread master wasn’t inspired by pans of focaccia until a few years ago when she experienced the Italian bread »

Shooting the Chefs

March 19, 2011
Thumbnail image for Shooting the Chefs

Good people. A couple of our recent photo gigs have reminded me of why I diverged off of the University path to follow a life in food. I really like the type of people which gravitate to this industry.  They are good people.

One of these recent jobs was for the Terranea resort, shooting the chefs, interiors, and food of their signature restaurant mar’sel. In general, chefs don’t like have their photos taken. They are blue collar, 16 hour day working dudes.  Or chicks.  The day of the shoot, about half of mar’sel’s kitchen staff were chicks.  Not ladies, women, »

Thumbnail image for Michael Ruhlman Had Something to Say: The Dance

Michael had something to say again. Previously he shared personal thoughts about cooking and how to not be an asshole, then followed up with a second, eloquent insight on Chef Thomas Keller.

It’s hard not to be fascinated by Ruhlman’s ideas. Whether or not someone shares his views, his thoughts are provoking. We find ourselves drawn into his pensive mind and want to know more.  That is why we teamed up with him to do this video series.

Make sure you head over to Michael’s post to read his extended thoughts on the subject of passion and the dance in »

Todd  &  Cristina Ferrare previewing the cookbook images

We’ve worked with some lovely people during our photography career, but yet have we been able to meet anyone so sincerely generous and kind as Cristina Ferrare. And better yet, Cristina’s new cooking show, A Big Bowl of Love, will debut in January on the Oprah Winfrey Network!

All her success, both past and present, are well deserved. No wonder Oprah Winfrey loves Cristina so much and we adore her immensely.

The Courage of Ideas – Video: Michael Ruhlman Had Something To Say

Thumbnail image for The Courage of Ideas – Video: Michael Ruhlman Had Something To Say

We’ve always been drawn to hubs of ideas. Terrific thoughts that are different and that pull us from our everyday norm. Ideas that  inspire and stimulate us, lighting a spark which leads to inspiring creative outbursts, open minds to different perceptions, challenging viewpoints and standards. Without them we’d be bored beyond imagination, and we don’t like to be bored.

Moments of inspiration that ignite a fabulous idea can come often, but it takes courage to follow through with them, especially if they’re ideas that challenge your skills, strengths or comfort level.

So, we had this idea. A storytelling idea which would give »

Perfect summer gatherings, crab fest & recipes for celebrating

August 2, 2009
Crab Fest

A perfect summer evening happened last week. Wonderful food and captivating conversations in the company of great people, on a gorgeous summer day which couldn’t have been any better for a Summer fete.

The loving and ever so gorgeous couple Brooke of FoodWoolf and her husband, Hans of BarFood, hosted a crab fest at their Los Angeles home. Their set up, attention to detail and menu was amazing. Right smack in the middle of their driveway alley, a long feasting table was set up, all wrapped with newspaper and ready for the onslaught of fresh Santa Barbara rock crabs.
