Back in my restaurant days, for the longest time we had made our mark serving through two meals a day. Breakfast and lunch. 

It was perfect for a vegetarian place since so many dishes for those two meals can naturally be vegetarian and no one thinks twice. Poached eggs, oatmeal, salads, eggplant parmesan.  We’d have regular customers come for years and never realize it was a vegetarian place until they were craving a tuna sandwich and found out after asking that their beloved restaurant was a vegetarian place.

Diane makes her way down the isle as I proudly hold up my find. A frozen bag of berries.

But not just any berry. Marionberries.

Here in the land of amazing farmers markets and with a garden teeming with fruit trees, herbs, and other delicious things, it isn’t too often that a frozen bag of anything gets us excited. But marionberries are special and are something which is nearly impossible to find in Southern California.

Some dishes don’t require a written recipe. Many home cooks we know grew up cooking without the guidance of the written word. Their kitchen lessons and “recipes” were passed down from generation to generation by watching, touching, tasting, testing and cooking from the heart.

Do you know of anyone who cooks like this? We know of many home cooks who have prepared food for us and these were some of the most wonderful meals that we have ever eaten. These dishes were made with so much love and heart.

I used to love granola bars as a kid. Especially the ones with chocolate chips or a chocolate coating on them, but somewhere along the life’s journey, the love affair ended.

Then, about a year ago, we were on the road and we had stopped in an REI to pick up some supplies. Needing  a quick pick-me-up, I grudgingly sorted through their health/power/energy/granola/random-good-for-you-so-you-can-go-all-day-but-tastes-like-crap bars.

It’s hard to not think of Dante when I look at the strawberry patch. The ruby red berries are still dangling from their lengthy stems, begging to be plucked. Normally this is the time of year Dante and Sierra both would scour every inch of the patch for sweet berries. And this was the time of year that we’d share the fruit with not just our beloved dogs, but with the other garden critters and hungry, pecking visitors.

Dante was a strawberry lover and in fact, a lover of all foods. Sierra, on the other hand, is much more timid about approaching strange food, particularly anything green or in the vegetative state. But she trusted her big brother Dante and if he ate the strawberries with abandon, then it was good enough for her to copy him.(...)

Mexican breakfasts are something we love to treat ourselves to on occasion and we always consider it such a treat. The flavor, textures and exciting spices of a plate of chilaquiles or breakfast tacos is a champion breakfast that fuels us for the long days. And when we have the opportunity to feast on such breakfasts in Mexico, we feel double lucky.

This year we had the opportunity to experience not only Mexican breakfasts, but authentic local food at  Food & Wine Magazines annual festival again in Ixapa/Zihuatanejo.

Certain foods bring back fond memories of childhood and often times it’s simple sweet treats that trigger big smiles. These blood orange Popsicles bring back moments of summer days when we’d reach in the freezer for a cool treat. As adults these blood orange pops made us so excited to indulge in Popsicles again because they are so good!!

Seriously, this blood orange pop recipe is so simple with just 3-4 ingredients but it’s packed with bright flavor from the fresh squeezed juice.  The challenge with these pops is limiting yourself to just eating one pop.

We entered the convention center’s ballroom to find two women sitting on the stage. One in her 30′s-40′s, chef jacket attired with a professional’s serene gaze. The other – a bubbly, plump Southern Grandma with short cropped hair, her enthusiasm barely contained. That woman was Shirley O. Corriher and over the next 45 minutes she would become one of my heroes.

It was the 2011 IACP conference in Austin, TX and Diane and I had just given a talk on food photography. With our duties done, we wandered the halls poking our heads into random sessions not knowing what to expect out of the different speakers. 30 seconds into listening to Shirley rhapsodize over different type of wheat flour and how that affects biscuits, cookies, cakes, etc…, I was hooked. I wanted to hear what this woman had to say.

The late afternoon hours were always the pups playtime. Even in Dante’s grey muzzled years, after the full warmth of the day had past and the air began to soften, Dante and Sierra would become puppies again. Playing tug-o-war. Chasing each other around with the randomness only the youth possess.

If you dared to step on the central lawn you were fair game for playtime. 100lbs of wheaten red muscle would come bounding up, simultaneously followed and circled by a white wiggling scamper.
