Strawberries and Cream Video – An unwritten recipe
Some dishes don’t require a written recipe. Many home cooks we know grew up cooking without the guidance of the written word. Their kitchen lessons and “recipes” were passed down from generation to generation by watching, touching, tasting, testing and cooking from the heart.
Do you know of anyone who cooks like this? We know of many home cooks who have prepared food for us and these were some of the most wonderful meals that we have ever eaten. These dishes were made with so much love and heart.
So, to celebrate and honor those cooks, recipes and kitchen traditions, we made this video. Filming this video reminds us of those simple dishes that only require some thought, patience and a bit of trial and error.
Here is the recipe story we made.
The strawberries in the garden are still plentiful and they were the perfect subjects to film for this strawberries and cream video. With a fresh berries, cream, powdered sugar and vanilla, we treated ourselves to the perfect afternoon snack.
Hopefully by watching this video, you’ll get an understanding of how to make this extremely simple whipped cream. All it takes is some personal touches to make it sweet to your personal taste.
Do you have any favorite dishes that you make or someone makes for you that you really don’t have a recipe for? Would love to hear!
Have a great day!

I miss you both – so this was almost as good as a visit…Happy Spring!
This must be my favourite winter snack.
Strawberries and cream are just the perfect combination for a (de)light snack and in this video you caught everything so perfectly. I almost wished the video would be longer but then again, minimalism is the key.
Thanks for sharing with us.
The video and photos are so gorgeous! I make big salads on the fly pulling ingredients from my fridge and pantry like my mother did when I was growing up. She would begin by scanning her fridge, taking out fresh ingredients, and then looking at what she could add from the shelves of her pantry. She once hosted a big post-wedding brunch for friends, and when unexpected guests just kept arriving (the guest count was supposed to be like 40, and by the end of the afternoon, there must have been 80 people, spilling out into the garden, sitting on the stairs), she took out her biggest bowl, tossed in a bunch of things from the fridge, opened a few cans of tuna, and presented the late-comers with a huge colorful mixed salad! So, after years in the kitchen with her, just hand me a bowl and I can put together a salad!
Goodness Gracious you make everything look so divine!!!
Very inspiring!!!
Lovely! I make my mama’s (who passed away when I was 9) chicken and dumplings recipe from scratch and from a memory she and then my daddy passed down to me through the years. It’s a wonderful comfort food, and I think about her every time I make it.
lovely! There is something really wonderful about cooking without a recipe- for me: freedom, confidence and simplicity.
<3 you guys! Miss your smiles!
lovely video! you two and sierra make a great team 🙂
I simply love your videos. “If you’re afraid of butter, use cream”. Julia <3
Absolutely gorgeous! I just picked fresh strawberries from my garden this very morning, so I now know what I have to do.
Another beautiful video! The quotes you chose were the best; especially the one by Michael Pollan.
ps Diane, nice manicure 🙂
Magda- lol, thank you! it’s a gel manicure. 🙂
Another great video! Captures that feeling of enjoying a sweet afternoon snack.
I have one side dish that comes to mind when I think of food I prepare without a recipe. Surprisingly it’s an Indian dish (not featured on KK)! After spending a great deal of energy prepping ingredients to make curries from scratch (my counter lined with small white bowls filled with aromatics and spices), I usually hit the “whatever” wall when it comes to Indian side dishes. For years, I would just warm up naan and cook some turmeric rice and call it a day. One evening, I had a large container of yogurt at hand and a fresh cucumber. I vaguely remember seeing a tv host preparing a raita (Nigella maybe). So I started playing around. Yogurt and grated cucumber at first. Then a pinch of cumin. A squeeze of lemon and a squidge of honey. Salt, pepper and chopped cilantro to finish. I spooned a bit out to taste and was like… “whoa.” My dinner guests LOVED it. I remember telling everyone I made it without a recipe! I’ve been making my “last minute” raita ever since 🙂
Such a perfect treat. Makes me feel like I’m a kid again picking and eating strawberries with my Poppa.
This video was so simple and beautiful. Nothing like some cream and strawberries to put a smile on anyone’s face! 😀 P.S. I loved when Todd put the whipped cream over his face. So cute! 😀
I LOVE whipped cream and strawberries!
I love whipped cream. And strawberries. Great video. And do I have a favorite dish that I really don’t have a recipe for? Yes, every day. It’s called open up the fridge and pantry and hope I can make something on the fly 🙂
