Does Microwaving Rice Paper Make them Crunchy?

Wow we were shocked at how fluffy and crispy rice paper becomes when it’s microwaved for about 1 minute. What you get is a wonderfully gluten free rice paper crisp that’s perfect for snacking or for dipping. It literally takes about 1 minute (depending on the size of your rice paper and power of your microwave) to get a crunchy rice paper snack to dive into.

How Long Does it Take to Make Rice Paper Crisps in the Microwave?

It depends on how powerful your microwave is and how large the size of the rice paper you choose that determines the timing. Usually it takes about 45 seconds for a 8-in rice paper round on full power. But we suggest you always start about 45 seconds, check the rice paper and add more time if needed.

Problems with Microwaving Rice Paper

Now no one talks about this on social media because all you see are creators showing the good, but rarely ever the bad. We tested several sizes and types of rice paper and not all brands of rice paper are created equal. Some are made with tapioca starch (or with rice flour & tapioca in different ratios) and the higher amount of tapioca starch in the rice paper, the less it puffs and more hard the edges get. But overall, most brands will work.

  • Some rice paper won’t get fluffy all around the edges. As you can see here in one of our tests, you’ll get several hot spots where the rice paper does get fluffy and crispy. But there will be some “un-fluffy” and un-cooked looking edges to the rice paper. Even the un-cooked edges are still crunchy. Overall, the taste is still crunchy and crispy. Maybe it’s not the prettiest, but it’s definitely pretty crunchy. rice paper crackers
  • Microwave power: there’s so many sizes and power potential of microwaves so cooking times will vary. Just use our baseline of about 45 seconds. After the first test, you’ll now what timing works best for your size of rice paper and power of microwave.

Adding Cheese to These Gluten Free Crisps

Yes, you can add some cheese on top of the rice paper before microwaving. Some creators have shown this technique on TikTok and Instagram. Parmesan cheese or any dry aged cheese works best. But regular cheddar cheese definitely did not work for us because the moisture and oil eventually burned before the rice paper could get fully fully and crunchy. So if you’re going to add cheese, use a good parmesan cheese. burnt cheese on microwave rice paper crisp
