The world probably hasn’t seen this before so here we go again with some leftovers and fun ideas: our wonton waffles recipe! What Are Wonton Waffles?

It’s our crazy little idea where we stuff some egg roll or dumpling filling between two wonton wrappers. Heat up the waffle maker and within minutes you have a crispy, savory wonton waffle. It blew us away at how quick, simple and absolutely crispy these savory waffles turned out. Our nephews, family and friends devoured them so fast, it was hard to keep up with just one waffle iron. These were just as delicious as our viral crispy smashed egg roll dumplings.

Wonton Waffles (Savory and Crispy)

If you can't find wonton wrappers you can always use dumpling wrappers, potsticker wrappers. If you only can find the larger egg roll wrappers, then just cut each egg roll wrapper sheet into quarters.

Ingredients

For the Wonton Waffles

  • 24-30 Wonton Wrappers or Skins
  • 1/2 pound (227 g) ground pork (or chicken, beef, shrimp, or vegan meat)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) finely minced ginger
  • 3 stalks green onions , finely minced
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cilantro or cabbage, finely minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt
  • cooking oil , for spraying or brushing

For the 5 minute Wonton Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) rice vinegar or distilled vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) sugar , optional
  • 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) hot water , this dissolves the sugar and makes sauce less salty
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame oil
  • 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) chili crunch / chili crisp , or your choice of hot sauce

Instructions

Make the Wonton Dipping Sauce

  • Combine everything into a bowl (1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce, minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon (15ml) rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons (10ml) sugar, 2 Tablespoons (30ml) hot water, 1 teaspoon (5ml) sesame oil, and 1 Tablespoon (15ml) chili crunch). Taste for seasonings. If you want it spicier, add some hot sauce or more chili crunch or chili crisp. Once you make the dip, set aside.

Make Wonton Filling

  • Make sure to finely mince the vegetables so they don’t poke through the wrappers. If you want, you can also use a little food processor, but that’s another thing to wash so we just usually hand chop.

  • In bowl combine the 1/2 lb. (227g) ground meat, 1 teaspoon (5ml) minced ginger, minced green onions, 1/2 cup (120ml) minced cilantro/cabbage, 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) garlic powder, 1 teaspoon (5ml) soy sauce, 1 teaspoon (5ml) sesame oil, and 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) salt.
  • Start heating your waffle maker

  • Lay out half the wonton wrappers and add about 1 Tablespoon (15ml) of the filling in the center of each wonton. Don’t spread the meat out too much cause you don’t want the meat to ooze out the edges during the waffle cooking. Keep the meat in the center of the wrapper (kind of like making a ravioli).

  • Lay another wonton wrapper on top of the meat and gently press down so the edges of the wrapper start to line up with one another.

  • Then press down the sides of the wonton to secure the filling in the center, creating a little ball of filling.
    Pressing edges to seal
  • The finished wonton should look like a ravioli. Repeat to form all the wontons.

  • Lightly brush or spray the waffle iron. Place the wonton in the waffle iron and brush or oil spray the top of the wonton.

  • Press down the waffle maker and cook the wonton for about 4-6 minutes. Cooking times will vary so much depending on your waffle maker. But check the wonton waffle about 4 minutes after cooking. If the wonton waffle is crispy, golden and the meat is cooked through then it’s finished.

Best Waffle Iron to Use?

Well, it depends on how fast you eat or how many you want to cook. Any waffle iron will do the job, but is it fast enough? The single little waffle makers are great and we tested those. But if you want to make more at a time, the 4 square waffle makers will do the trick.

Different Types of Wonton Wappers or Skins

These are easily found in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores. You can usually find them in the prepared vegetable section where they sell packaged and prepped vegetables. Bagged salads, pre-cut veggies and prepared fruit is where most dumpling, egg roll, gyoza or wonton wrappers live. There’s even vegan plant based wrappers too.
