iPhone Video #3- On Assignment with Penny- Barbacoa in East LA
On Assignment with Penny: Barbacoa Lady Reunion in East LA
Video completely filmed on iPhone 4
Thank you for joining us on this journey with friend and photographer Penny De Los Santos. Producing this On Assignment video series has been a visual awakening. To be able to collaborate together and celebrate the stories of special souls, places and events is wonderful.
Previously, we’ve shared stories from Chef Joanne Chang in Boston and Food Trailers in Austin. Today’s Los Angeles edition is a special one because it’s not just a story about food, it’s a reunion.
This reunion is a dear one. Penny photographed a compelling Barbacoa story for Saveur magazine this year. What resulted out of that photo shoot was a a friendship, a bond between Penny and her subject Flor, the Barbacoa Lady. This connection that sprouted between Penny and Flor inspired Penny to return for a reunion.
This time, Penny returned to Flor as a friend. They cook and share a meal together that evolves right before your eyes.
What we all know of this “Barbacoa Lady” is from the magazine and stories that Penny has shared. But what this video shares with you today is all the love, camaraderie and respect behind the scenes. You get a intimate peak into the the lives of two people after the images are made, outside of all the eyes of the publishing world.
What you will see in this video is a life friendship between two people that was brought together because of photography. That’s how powerful photography can be.
thank you for watching and for your support,
diane and todd

Holy Moly! I think Iām gonna cry! Itās so beautiful! Florās house/neighborhood reminds me of the casa/barrio we grew up in (El Paso, TX). My mom still lives there today! WOW! It just goes to show that you donāt need a fancy kitchen to create magic. WOW! Iām in awe! So touching, so beautiful, so REAL!
Really terrific! Just out of curiosity, what kind of a camera/lens did you use on the still pic of the people eating? The iPhone? Thanks.
Easily put, awesome š those tacos look insane. LOVE
I really loved this video… I want an iphone right now!!!
Love to saw penny in action taking pictures!
I loved this. Can’t wait till I’m able to upgrade my iphone.
The video is jawdropping. So in love. Glad you’re Seattle-bound, hope our paths cross more than once.
Lovely post and video…thanks for sharing your work with us all. Beautiful.
And I saw the video Penny put on her site, too.
And oh, I saw the tweets about your Star Party. Sounds like a blast! I was at a Star Party here in San Diego about a month ago. Fun…but I want to see your new studio!! š
Another fun trip! So cute with the horses clopping down the street and the yard sale in progress. Down home good eats!
If you can, I really think that the Pantry at Delancey in Seattle and the two women who run it (Brandi Henderson and Olayia Land) deserve to be featured in one of your videos – the enterprise they’ve started has been really wonderful and is just getting past its first season of being open. The Pantry offers cooking classes, catering and family-style meals that are informative and inspired, and I really have loved seeing and participating in the community that they are creating. I’ve put their website in the comment website field in case this would suit your film needs.
I’ve really enjoyed this series of videos and can’t wait to see what you guys end up featuring from my town!
Love the series! Awesomeness.
Great vlog! Beautiful and personal. Now I’ve GOT to have an iphone!
These videos are wonderful, that shoot in Saveur was particularly memorable. It’s always a pleasure to see Penny in action, and interacting with the people she photographs. Truly inspiring, always.
I’ll have to agree with Nancy. That must have been such a special moment for Flor to see her story in the magazine. I also love the salsa making shots. Great job with the 100% iPhone movie!
Big SMILE. Beautiful!!!
As always, your work never ceases to inspire me.. and this video is no different. I loved all of it, but my favorite part was the look on Flor’s face when Penny was showing her the magazine – for me it was a poignant reminder of what Penny had said about “seeing”
Thank you for this beautiful story and letting me “see” through your eyes…
I seriously loved watching this. You captured such beautiful moments, thanks for sharing it’s possible to do such great things on just the iPhone!
