If it is within your next of the woods, then you might be very familiar with their delicious spicy wontons. Not they’re not “that spicy”, but there’s enough heat and tingle to make your taste buds crave more. Tender soft and slippery wontons in this umami laden sauce is fantastic and what makes us head to our nearest location. Now we have a homemade spicy wontons in chili sauce version to keep our pockets a little more budget friendly.

Quick and Easy Method of Spicy Wontons and Dumplings

There’s alot of recipes online that will go through the homemade steps of making the wontons. We’re cutting corners here for a simpler version but equally delicious. Yes, we use frozen wontons and dumplings and are not ashamed of it. The marketplace for frozen wontons and dumplings has grown tremendously over the years and the quality has grown with it. We’re always blown away at how many brands out there with such a delicious product. Sometimes it’s hard to believe how something so accessible and budget friendly can be so delicious.

Spicy Wontons or Dumplings in Chili Sauce

Enjoy this recipe with your favorite frozen wontons, dumplings, gyoza or potstickers. It's the sauce that makes it super special, which is super customizable. Make it more spicy, salt, sweet or tangy. You can use our homemade chili crisp recipe or a store bought. Chili garlic sauce works nicely too.

Ingredients

For the Wontons, Dumplings or Potstickers

  • 10-12 frozen wontons, dumplings or potstickers

For the Spicy Sauce

  • 3 Tablespoons (45 ml) chili crisp , or to personal taste
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) low sodium soy sauce , or soy sauce of choice
  • 2 teaspons (2 g) sugar or sugar substitute , optional
  • 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) hot water (helps melt the sugar)
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) rice vinegar or Chinese black vinegar or distilled vinegar
  • 1-2 stalks green onions , sliced
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame seeds

Instructions 

  • Heat pot of water and boil or steam dumplings according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

  • While dumplings are heating, make the spicy sauce: combine all the spicy sauce ingredients in a large bowl (3 Tablespoons chili crisp, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 Tablespoons hot water, 2 teaspoons sesame oil, 2 teaspoons rice vinegar, sliced green onions, and 1 teaspoon sesame seeds).

  • Taste for seasonings and customize based on your spice and salt level.

  • Add hot wontons (or dumplings) to the sauce, gently stir and enjoy.
