Junk Food Confession: Italian Ice and Custard
iphone of our newest obsession
We’ve been secretly sneaking these in during our daily market stops. So we just have to share.
This sweet treat, another junk food confession, has saved our lives over the past two weeks. With a surprise spike in last Summer heat, everyone’s been whining and crying about how this 95 degree weather is melting our spirits. But not us. You know why? We’ve been fueling our sweaty days with this favorite sweet treat called italian ice and custard.
This deadly, but cold and refreshing, combination of different flavored italian ice topped with wonderful frozen custard is a new discovery to us.
It’s certainly been around, as we quickly learned from a google search. But while we’ve been living in a fast food cave, particularly when it comes to desserts, this little beauty of a treat was hidden from our junk food list. While other folks have been indulging and raving about these ice and custard combos nationwide at Rita’s , at Joe’s Garden Grove and Confetti in Costa Mesa, we’re slowly catching up by making up for all the lost years of eating it in the last two weeks.
How many of these have we had? A few. Well, a few more than most, but not as much as some.
Hope we’re not the only ones who have had these and are as addicted. Today we’re already hovering some new flavors. Perhaps a margarita ice with lemon custard on top? Or cactus cooler ice with salted caramel custard? And what’s you’re junk food confession for this weekend. Indulge us so we don’t feel so guilty.

I’ve been to Confetti and I love it! There are so many different types of flavors to choose from. The vanilla custard is definitely my favorite. Seeing your picture makes me crave Italian Ice now, but I’m so far away from having it anytime soon.
Love & love Italian Ice… Found a “creamy” texture brand (luigi’s) at the grocery – try watermelon, berry – the other flavors have an “icier” consistency. On my way to the freezer now…
Anything with frozen custard! Try root beer ice with vanilla 😉
I need that now, want that now..I am in love with how it looks.
There’s a Rita’s within walking distance of our house – so as you can imagine we indulged in quite a few of these this summer! Even the pup gets a little “doggie cup” of vanilla custard… eash. Spoiled!
Sounds kinda like shave ice with ice cream (which, incidentally I had yesterday) or the ice cream slush floats we have in Hawaii. I usually need to share them with a friend because they’re such sugar bombs, but they taste so, so good! Especially after a day at the beach.
I’d be addicted to this 🙂
isn’t joe’s the best? they’re moving down the street. looks like a bigger parking lot, yippeee. enjoy!!!!
I need them to show up, miraculously, in Orlando. Now 😀
Um. These need to come to Chattanooga. Now, please.
My husband grew up outside Philly so we are VERY happy Rita’s has finally made it to LA
I loved the icey coffee drinks that the you can get at the gelato stores. Cream, espresso and your choice of gelato. It was unlike anything you can get in the normal stores, so strong but sweet and creamy. I love the combination of chocolate chilli gelato and cinnamon custard cream.
I hope you post recipe soon for one!
The town I grew up in had a Sweet Shoppe and one of their specialties was homemade Italian ices, which you could purchase as is, or top with a mound of their soft serve ice cream. Sort of the concept behind the creamsicle, I guess, but with any fruit flavor, not just orange ice. My favorite was always the watermelon ice with vanilla soft serve. Just seeing the photo above made me think of it and how much I would love one right now!
