Thoughts on Instagram Video
Hi Friends. Are you all on Instagram? If not, you’re missing out on really simple, yet fun community of friends catching up with one another via pictures. We enjoy it and it’s always been a serene place to browse though our friends day from their mobile photographs. But now video is a new 15 second feature on our once simple feed of quiet images.
We’ve heard so many different thoughts about Instagram video, but are curious to read what you think? Are you loving it? Liking it?
The feature itself is great to be able to give folks the option to share moving images. We’re big fans of video if you already didn’t know. The feature to choose your lead photo for video is great and being able to customize that give us more creative liberty and choice. But what was hard for us to appreciate right away was how intrusive the sound and audio can be.
When scrolling through our feed, it can be awfully disruptive to get a jolt of audio from the video. We love seeing the videos, but just wish there was an option to click play when we choose to, rather than have the video auto-play.
So we really wanted to share some video and figured that the only way for us to not scare our followers with a sudden rush of loud sound, was to first share a quiet video with music playing in the background. That way, we don’t shock the heck out of our followers.
Here’s our first Instagram video we worked on together called “Morning Ritual”.
We’re on Instagram as @ToddPorter and @DianeCu
And we’re overloaded with garden heirloom tomatoes now. So here’s an Instagam video about…..tomatoes!
Have you tried instagram video? We want to learn more about it and understand what folks like to see?

I agree about the sound, when I found the auto-play off setting, I was so happy!! I love your videos and instagrams. I agree about instagram, I feel like it’s a great way to keep in touch with old friends and food blogger friends.
yes, love instagram video! and love these! We planted our first heirlooms a few months ago and so far we have a few . . hoping for some yummy, delicious heirlooms as well!
You’re amazing, an inspiring. My first video looks nothing like yours. And I love the music you set to the background, I think it makes the video.
While I enjoy the videos I hate scrolling through my feed and being jolted by the noise. Not to mention embarrassed by the sometimes-loud videos while I’m at my office desk or standing in the check-out line. I agree that I would much prefer a “play” button over the automatic play so I could have more control so if I’m…say, at work and taking a 5 minute break and want to scroll through my feed I don’t have to worry about disrupting my co-workers as well 🙂
Corinne- are you Instagramming while at work?! Love it! Just don’t let your boss see. 🙂
Hi,
Really love all of your posts and videos. I would tend to agree, the sound is a bit intrusive. The videos are ok, but I think I still enjoy just the pictures….being able to create my own thoughts or just enjoying them for ‘being in the moment’ that they were taken.
Looking forward to your next post!
Hi guys! You made it a very easy decision for me to follow you both on instagram. These videos are beautiful! And even if they did jolt me with their sound, I wouldn’t mind because they are just so lovely! 🙂
I also found the auto-play feature to be quite jarring. Luckily it can be toggled on and off in your account options menu.
Did you know that you can uncheck the option to autostart videos in the settings menu? I much prefer it that way.
FYI – you actually can disable the auto-play videos! If you go into Instragram, your profile, then Settings, you can just turn off the “auto-play videos” option 🙂
If you go to the “options” part of your Instagram profile, there is an option at the bottom that says “Auto-Play Videos. If you switch it to “off,” the IG videos won’t automatically start playing and jolt you as you’re scrolling through your video. Now, my turn, how did you get your IG videos to your site? Have two from Friday that I’d love to transfer over…
Hi Cate,
For the embedding we googled embed instagram video and found a few options. The one we ended up using was Embed.ly. Simple and free. Just put in the url for the IG video and it generates the embed code.
