Best Waffle Iron to Use?
Well, it depends on how fast you eat or how many you want to cook. Any waffle iron will do the job, but is it fast enough? The single little waffle makers are great and we tested those. But if you want to make more at a time, the 4 square waffle makers will do the trick.
Use Different Types of Wrappers or Dumpling Skins
Ideally, the small wrappers are great for small waffle makers. You can use the regular egg roll wrappers, but cut them into 4 squares. These are easily found in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores. You can usually find them in the prepared vegetable section where they sell packaged and prepped vegetables. Bagged salads, pre-cut veggies and prepared fruit is where most dumpling, egg roll, gyoza or wonton wrappers live. There’s even vegan plant based wrappers too.

- 1/2 cup (120 ml) cilantro or cabbage, finely minced
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt
- cooking oil , for spraying or brushing

- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) sugar , optional
- 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) hot water , this dissolves the sugar and makes sauce less salty
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) sesame oil
- 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) chili crunch / chili crisp , or your choice of hot sauce
Equipment
- Oil Sprayer optional
Instructions
Make the Wonton Dipping Sauce
- Combine the Dipping Sauce ingredients into a bowl (1/4 cup soy sauce, minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons sugar, 2 Tablespoons hot water, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and 1 Tablespoon chili crunch). Taste for seasonings. If you want it spicier, add some hot sauce or more chili crunch or chili crisp. Set aside.
Make Egg Roll Filling
- Make sure to finely mince the vegetables so they don’t poke through the wrappers. If you want, you can also use a little food processor, but that’s another thing to wash so we just usually hand chop.
- In bowl combine the 1/2 lb. ground meat, 1 teaspoon minced ginger, minced green onions, 1/2 cup minced cilantro/cabbage, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Start heating your waffle maker.
- Lay out half the wrappers and add about 1 Tablespoon (15ml) of the filling in the center of each wrapper. Don’t spread the meat out too much because you don’t want the meat to ooze out the edges during the waffle cooking. Keep the meat in the center of the wrapper (kind of like making a ravioli).
- Lay another wrapper on top of the meat and gently press down so the edges of the wrapper start to line up with one another.
- Then press down the sides of the wrapper to secure the filling in the center, creating a little ball of filling.
- It should look like a ravioli. Repeat to form all the stuffed wrappers.
- Lightly brush or spray the waffle iron. Place the stuffed wrapper in the waffle iron and brush or spray the top with oil.
- Press down the waffle maker and cook the egg roll waffles for about 4-6 minutes. Cooking times will vary depending on your waffle maker. But check the egg roll waffle after about 4 minutes after cooking. If the egg roll waffle is crispy, golden and the meat is cooked through then it’s finished.
- Allow the egg roll waffles to cool a bit and enjoy with the quick dipping sauce or your dipping sauce of preference.
