Rice Paper Spiral Pinwheels (Air Fryer or Oven)with Egg Roll Filling
Here’s another great way to use gluten free rice paper instead of puff pastry. Make our crispy rice paper spiral pinwheels. They are so good and we’re so surprised at how quickly they came together. Our rice paper spirals recipe is a great way to enjoy a gluten free snack. We share two different cooking techniques for air fryer rice paper spirals and oven baked rice paper spirals.

Crispy Rice Paper Spirals for Gluten Free Pinwheels
Traditionally pinwheels are made by using puff pastry then baked or air fried to a crispy pastry exterior. But our version uses rice paper as an alternative and the results are fantastic! The rice paper bakes or air fries to a wonderful crispy exterior leaving the savory filling inside to be perfectly cooked.

Different Types of Fillings for Rice Paper Pinwheels
We use a traditional asian filling with all the savory flavors you would find in egg rolls or dumplings. But you don’t have to limit yourself to strictly asian flavors. Here’s some other filling ideas:
- Ham and cheese fillings are great for a breakfast alternative.
- use spinach and feta cheese for a spanakopita filling.
- Big mac versions are popular using ground beef and cheddar cheese with some chopped pickle inside
- Turkey pesto is a perfect comfination. Add some swiss and it’s delicious.

Possible Problems with Rolling the Spirals
Now you’re dipping the rice paper in beaten egg so things can get slimy and slippery. Just roll one spiral at a time and work quickly to lay a thin strip of filling across the rice paper. Don’t try to lay out rice paper for multiple spirals/pinwheels at the same time because the rice paper will soften too quickly and you’ll have a mess when you get to roll the second or third pinwheel.

- Oil Sprayer , optional
- Parchment Paper , for oven baking
Instructions
Make the Filling
- Chop the 1 cup of minced cabbage, 1/4 cup shredded carrots, 3 minced green onions, and optional 1 teaspoon of ginger together until they are finely minced. If they are too big and chunky, you might have a problem with the filling poking through the wrapper.
- In bowl combine all filling ingredients (1/2 pound ground pork (or meat of choice), cabbage-carrot-green onion-ginger mix, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper).
- Or if you're using ground shrimp (or finely minced shrimp), the filling will look like this.
Make the Spirals
- Beat the egg until smooth then place the beaten eggs in a large plate.
- One at a time, dip 3 dry rice paper sheets in the beaten egg, coating both sides (the beaten egg is going to hydrate the rice paper, you don't need to dip them in water beforehand).
- Lay the rice paper sheets on a cutting board so they are slightly overlapping.
- Working quickly, lay a thin strip of meat across the length of the rice paper sheets, leaving about 1-inch on each end with no filling.
- Roll into a long cylinder, folding in the ends to seal the meat as you roll the cylinder.
- Curl the cylinder into a spiral. Don't make the spirals too tight. Leave a little space between the layers so they can cook all the way through.
- Repeat making the spirals for the remaining 2 spirals. Top with sesame seeds.
For Air Frying Spirals (Pinwheels)
- Spray the air fryer base/basket with oil spray.
- Place the spirals in the air fryer basket, making sure they are not touching.
- Spray the spirals with oil spray.
- Air fry at 400°F (205°C) for 15-20 minutes or until crispy. If the base isn't crispy to your liking, flip the spirals and air fry for another 2-3 minutes or to your liking.
For Oven Baking Spirals (Pinwheels)
- Preheat oven at 400°F (205°C). Line a baking sheet pan with parchment paper. Oil the parchment paper.
- Lay the spirals on the oiled parchment. Spray or brush the spirals with oil.
- Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 25-30 minutes or until crispy to your liking.
- Allow to cool slightly.
- For serving, bite into them or cut into sections. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
