Type 2 Diabetes: My Story and Life Lately
Hi Friends, it’s Diane. The last 6 months have been quite a learning lesson for me in so many ways. In October 2024 I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes with an A1C of 12.8. For those of you who understand those numbers, it’s pretty obvious my blood sugars were spiraling out of control. I was on the verge of having a stroke, heart attack or so many other issues that I’m not ready to discuss right now. But what is important is that I’ve been working hard at controlling my blood sugar levels.
Controlling My High Blood Sugar
I’ve been talking about my journey to friends and family but feel that maybe my story is something I need to share openly. Being in front of the camera is not my comfort zone at all. It’s a mix of stage fright and hating the way I sound. But to help me through this journey, I’ve found the courage to discuss it openly. I’m not sharing it behind a voice-over or pictures. But rather, by just being me I can speak honestly about how I’m managing this life change. I’m hoping to connect and learn from others like myself. I shared it all on video if you want to know my Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis story and where I’ve come along since October of 2024.

How Does This Change The Recipes on Our Recipe Site?
We’ll definitely be sharing more low carb and recipes that I (Diane) eat on a daily basis. But I also treat myself too so I’m not fully transitioning anything here to be a Diabetic recipe site. I’m not here to give any medical advice on the Diabetic diet. I eat the way I need to eat and it will always differ from someone else’s diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. Also, we’re always cooking for family and friends so recipes here are a loving reflection of those family shared meals together. Todd isn’t diabetic and will continue to share recipes he enjoys eating & ones we enjoy making for others. But definitely be on the lookout for more of my ramblings about healthy and delicious recipes that helped me control my messy blood glucose numbers!
Hi Diane
I have been dealing with Type 2 for over 25 years. I have been able to keep in under control most of the time with an A1C of between 6 & 7 until recently it jumped up to above 8. My body decided it was going to reject Methformin dosage of 1500mg twice a day. My Doctor & I started making adjustments. We eliminated Methformin, added Jardiance, continued using Byetta 10mg twice a day before morning and evening meals. Cleaned my system up now taking 1 tablet 500mg methformin with 1 tablet 10mg Jardiance morning and 2 tablets 500mg methformin evening with 1 tablet 10mg Jardiance. Majority of the time my Glucose is 120 to 135. I has taken about 8 months to get it in balance.
I hesitate to give unasked for health advice, but if diet and meds are not regulating your Type 2 diabetes as you would expect, ask your Dr about screening for LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults). I was diagnosed in my 40s and it usually needs different treatment than Type 2, especially over the long term. The screening is just blood work and usually gives a clear diagnosis. You may have already looked into this, or it may not apply to you, but LADA remains under-diagnosed, which can be dangerous.
Hi Julie, I appreciate any insight and everything is a learning experience. So thanks so much for your advice.
I actually did get tested for LADA as my endocrinologist originally believed I was LADA. But after the blood work, I did not posses the GAD antibody. Thus, was diagnosed at type 2. But sometimes I wonder if I’m borderline LADA. It’s still too early to tell and question my test results.
thanks so much!
I wish you well on your health ventures. If you be including healthier recipes on the site that is fine with me! I recently went through an effort to lower my cholesterol without meds and succeeded. It wasn’t easy, but it changed relationship with food. I always look forward to your posts!
Thanks so much Vickie! Cholesterol is another issue I’m on high alert about. Glad you took control and are doing better!
You can control it. I read the book by Dr. Jason Fung and with intermittent fasting and low carb eating my A1C is 4.5-4.8.
Wow Kelly, those are incredible A1C numbers. Great for you and I’ll check out the book.
