How big is your garden? I'm amazed at how many different plants you grow! Also, would you consider making a map to show how the space is laid out? I would love to see that. My own garden is a lesson in learning as I go, but I love to see what other people have done with their outdoor spaces.

Thank you very much, Megan.
We started with almost no space, just a tiny patio we shared with our roommates about 12 years ago. The next place, had a bigger patio, and now our current home as a nice sized garden (@11,000 sqft.) which we try to use efficiently and beautifully. Gardens can be very low maintenance or high maintenance depending on how you set them up. We tried to make our as low maintenance as possible by using drip irrigation on timers, and utilizing pathways and rock areas throughout the garden. Most of the plants are edibles so the trips to the backyard "grocery store" help maintain everything. We plant what we love to use.
There are bunches of stuff you can start with. Herbs tend to be the most forgiving and are one of the best culinary plants to start with. Try to put them where they will get the best light and close to where you'll remember to water them. When we started we made a list of what we loved to eat, then figured out what we could grow from there. Good luck.

Two things:

a) The design of your site is WONDERFUL--this page most of all. A little journal for all of your garden plants, including pictures, makes for really compelling reading =)

b) I am astonished by the bounty of this list!! It just goes on and on! I found myself slack-jawed. I think this list might include every citrus that I've ever heard of (and then some). I am a nineteen-year-old in college with absolutely no planting space, and I have never aspired to be a gardener before, but the idea of growing a garden for sustenance is incredibly appealing (there's nothing better than homegrown fruits and veggies!). I wonder if you could tell me--how do you manage a garden this extensive? Does it take an immensity of space? Finally, do you think that there are any edible plants that an inexperienced college student could grow indoors? I am in awe of your success and want to take advantage of your garden wisdom! Thank you!
