Video #3 – Finally showing our “mugs” to you and Anthony Bourdain

by White on Rice Couple on March 24, 2008

We’re throwing in the towel and surrendering to the pressures of showing our smiles, faces, mugs.

It’s was fun while it lasted, hiding our faces behind the lens of our camera and only showing what distorted images we were able to achieve through our computer software. Obviously, our ultra radical “x-ray” , funky “twirl” images and speed racing grocery trip weren’t enough to satisfy some you nosy, facade hungry bloggers out there. :D

Anthony Bourdain, one of the few food personalities that we adore and respect, had an FAN-atic casting call for his No Reservations show. Viewers sent in an audition video encouraging Tony where they would like for him to visit. The winner will be his traveling companion for that No Reservations episode. How fun!!

Bummer, we missed the deadline!! We weren’t able to edit our 3 minute submission in time and we blame it all on work, work, work. But we’re submitting our video anyway since we had all the recorded footage of Little Saigon in Orange County, California. We really want Anthony Bourdain to come down to our neck of the woods for some awesome Vietnamese food and fun.

This video had to follow the format of their Submission Guidelines:

  • Only a 3 minute video - This was a tough one because there was so much that we wanted to show to entice Tony to visit Little Saigon. We really had to edit this clip lean and mean. So there was no time to mess around ! (Well, not too much!)
  • No music allowed- What?! We’re all about the music Tony! How are we gonna give the rhythm and feel of the dynamic culture and foods of Little Saigon with out some pumpin’ Viet music? Well, we did our best.

So we’re making the jump from faceless White On Rice Couple to full on frontage, baby! We’re going all out and exposing not just our faces, but everything from our slurping and speaking silliness to an attempt at seriously sharing our love of Little Saigon, Orange County, California.

Ya never know! Maybe we can tempt Anthony Bourdain enough to still allow us to be his traveling companion for a Little Saigon episode. Keep your fingers crossed for us and wish us luck! :)

Another fellow blogger made an awesome call out to Anthony Bourdain to visit the Philippines. He certainly deserves the opportunity to be Anthony’s guide to the awesome world of Philippino food and culture. Good luck Marvin!!

“Little ditty, ’bout Todd & Diane” lol

The vid looks great and Tony should get his bony ass over there to OC.

It’s so good to put faces to the blogger(s)…now that wasn’t so bad was it?

Here in Toronto, we do have a significant Viet population, now I’ve gotta find a pretty guide to show me around! ;)

You guys are both adorable! Todd I mean that in a manly way, lol. So nice to see you both!

T&D, if I were as cute as you guys (sorry for the twee adjective, I’m sort of stuck on it for now when I refer to Americans), I wouldn’t hide behind a Photoshop filter or giant hat! :)

Knowing how insane chefs are, if Bourdain chose you he’d probably whisk you all off to actual Saigon, heh heh. Great vid (I LOLed on the part where Diane said, let’s get smokes for Tony)! I now know where to look for a great meal in the OC– straight to the WhiteonRiceCouple’s house!!

You two are the sexiest couple EVER! Forget Tony, you guys should have your own show. Even without music, your video looks professional and convinced me to invite myself over to Little Saigon sometime soon!

Allison & Julie – Thank you so much and being picked is almost like the winning the lottery, with our luck. But we had fun making it anyways!

Peter- Right! Tony needs to get his bony butt down here to visit us. :) Hey Peter, you know we are showing our mugs here especially for you!

Lisa- Yeah, Todd is quite cute but in a macho way!

Manggy- We pretty much did not really plan any specifics for this video during filming it. We just did what two dorks with a video camera would do, but we were extra pleased with the “smokes for Tony” part too!

Jesse- Give us a shout when you’re in the area! We’ll give you a tour and even a motorcycle ride! :)

B- Thanks and we are so looking forward to see what’s up your casting thing-y next week!

Bee & Jai- Wow, thanks for the encouragement. We’re a little too shy to submit it to Food Network. :)

Lydia- Luckily the durian was not ripe yet. Don’t know if I would have had such a pleasant reaction when I sniffed it!

Rita- Thank you Our Miss Rita Moca ! Hope you’re feeling better.

Evil Mamma- Thanks for the heads up on Tony tonight. We’ll be watching.

Angie- Now that you see us, let us see you! We kinda see you behind all your veggies!

Big Boys – Ok, will do that. Does that mean I get to really bite Todd’s marzipan head off?

Jen – I love to eat lots and lots and I really do eat lots and lots. But I also exercise and exercise because I want to eat lots and lots more. When I don’t get out to the great outdoors to burn some calories, I take kick box classes. Hai….yah!!

Kitt & SRA- Sorry, you snooze you lose! J/K ! It should be up again by now because we had to re-load the video.

Christine – Merci Beaucoup and Todd really has gotten his Viet food words down! I yell at him in Vietnamese so he can get some Viet language listening lessons. :)

I think y’all have gotten good to the point where you should get yourself a 3-CCD camera and some royalty-free music and really start going for it at PBS and such. You’re better than some folks who are already out there.

That video is great–I hope it does the trick and gets you a visit. Very nicely done. Also, its great to see the faces behind the blog. :-)

And might I add how jealous I am of the great food and produce you have access to? I had jackfruit in India, fell in love with it, and never saw it again except in pickled, canned form.

Fabulously fun videos you’ve been putting on your site! You’re both talented, creative people and make great hosts. I love the realness of your demeanors, not all plastic-y and such. (Is plastic-y a word? I don’t think so, but it should be.)

But seriously, this is fun, informative content voiced with smooth narration and hosted with a comfortable presence. Someone (networks pay attention!) — Anthony Bourdain or not — is bound to notice. I would tune in to watch you, oh wait, I already do!!

finally! the mystery is revealed! it really is a shame that you guys missed the deadline. i would have loved to seen your mugs on no reservations. i completely agree about tony – he is one of the only respectable food oriented people with a show on tv anymore.

now i’m left with the problem of wanting some good vietnamese food at 10:30am! guess i’ll just have to watch the video again and dream.

Ol’ Anthony Bourdain would be LUCKY to pal around with you two! Maybe you’ll get lucky and he’ll forgive the tardiness of your video….and if he does pick you then you must let us know so we can skulk around little Saigon behind you – adoring fans and all…you could just refer to us – on camera – as your KP’s….kitchen peeps! You are both adorable – no more masks in the kitchen – that’s got to be a relief! (What it is about Anthony Bourdain that makes women weak in the knees….or is that just me?!)
