Video: Vietnamese Home Cooking by Charles Phan of The Slanted Door
To be able to work with people who love what they do is why we always feel so lucky to be doing what we do. Being able to photograph and film someone immersed in their work is truly inspiring. Chef Charles Phan is the perfect example of dedication, passion and love of one’s craft. So when Ten Speed Press asked us to travel to San Francisco to film the video promo for Charles’s latest cookbook, Vietnamese Home Cooking, we were especially excited to accept the project.
Chef Charles Phan of The Slanted Door restaurant has a cookbook coming out this Summer called, Vietnamese Home Cooking. In his gorgeous cookbook, he shares tips, techniques and recipes for the home cook to make a wonderful Vietnamese meal for family and friends. We haven’t seen the final cookbook yet, but after tasting one of the dishes, this cookbook is sure to be approachable and encouraging for even the newest of cooks who want to learn Vietnamese home cooking.
Here is the video that we produced for Ten Speed Press and Charles Phan. It was a joy to be able to film Charles cooking alongside his 3 children in the kitchen. Moments like these when families get together to cook and eat together makes us love our job even more.
Hope you enjoy his story.

I can’t wait to see Charles Phan’s new cookbook. Great job on the video. Charles really seems so approachable and makes Vietnamese cooking look so simple and less intimidating.
I am totally down with this book, we ate at The Slanted Door last summer, my kids are still talking about it. awesome!
cool man!
Oh, well done! I’d love to eat at his restaurant and read his book!
Lovely job!
Congrats on the video and thank you for sharing it with us! I’ve been a huge fan of Charles Phan/The Slanted Door since he had his small restaurant in soma/mission area of SF. I crave his food and eat here whenever possible. It’s nice to see his family and hear his philosophy.
Wish I could get the video link to work! We really enjoyed our lunch at the Slanted Door in the Ferry Building. I was fortunate to study with an Asian chef years ago and we did cover the cuisine of Vietnam, but only briefly. I’ve always wanted to study it more as I love the fresh flavors. Lately I’ve been wanting a Vietnamese cookbook (in fact D I was going to ask for your recommendation). Now I know which one to wait for! Wish it was coming out sooner. On my “ideas to post list” I have summer rolls in rice paper (fueled by your last fantastic workshop) and summer noodle bowls with the wide brown rice noodles. Time to get over to 99 Ranch or little Saigon for some shopping.
Sally- hi Sally, maybe the video doesn’t work in the RSS? But were you able to view the video on this post? thanks you and glad you love the summer rolls!
Vietnamese food always smells and tastes fresh and like I’m having a real taste of the Earth. I can’t wait to get this book. The idea of making it has never entered my mind but now I can’t wait to get my hands on this book to give it a try. Thank you for sharing…besos…
