This video is dedicated to you all, to each and every single person who has impacted our lives this year. Because of your friendship, our lives are richer in ways that we never, ever imagined.

2011 was tremendous for us. New friendships forged and fresh faces that we were finally able to meet at our workshops and conferences. To connect with those of you that we only knew online and to hear your stories strengthens our commitment to share, embrace and give back. Thank you to all our old, forever friends who inspire us to be better people.

The world was our playground of dreams this year. Travel was our palette for creativity and inspiration, but we had to take chances, make big risks to get there. Those valuable experiences remind us to never look back.

We wish you all a new year of continuous laughter surrounded by your loved ones. Immerse yourself with people and things that matter to you most. At the end of the day, that’s what really counts. And nourishes us deeply.

Pizza is one of those foods that makes all adults and kids happy. But homemade pizza is one that can not only warm the home, but get everyone excited to start creating custom “pies”.

Last month we traveled to Minneapolis to shoot the promo video for Jeff Hertberg and Zoe Francois’s new book, Artisan Pizza and Flatbread in Five minutes a Day. Both Jeff and Zoe have best selling books out already that you might already have. If you don’t already have these books, then they are a must on your bookshelf. Their creation of their no-knead dough has everyone making fresh bread so quickly and easily. When one thought that making fresh bread took a life time and a Ph.D degree, Jeff and Zoe proved them wrong and made fresh break making accessible, fun and successful.

On Assignment with Penny: Barbacoa Lady Reunion in East LA

Thank you for joining us on this  journey with friend and photographer Penny De Los Santos. Producing this On Assignment video series has been a visual awakening. To be able to collaborate together and celebrate the stories of special souls, places and events is wonderful.

Previously, we’ve shared stories from Chef Joanne Chang in Boston and Food Trailers in Austin. Today’s Los Angeles edition is a special one because it’s not just a story about food, it’s a reunion.

This reunion is a dear one. Penny photographed a compelling Barbacoa story for Saveur magazine this year. What resulted out of that photo shoot was a a friendship, a bond between Penny and her subject Flor, the Barbacoa Lady. This connection that sprouted between Penny and Flor inspired Penny to return for a reunion.

This time, Penny returned to Flor as a friend. They cook and share a meal together that evolves right before your eyes.

What we all know of this “Barbacoa Lady” is from the magazine and stories that Penny has shared. But what this video shares with you today is all the love, camaraderie and respect behind the scenes. You get a intimate peak into the the lives of two people after the images are made, outside of all the eyes of the publishing world.

What you will see in this video is a life friendship between two people that was brought together because of photography. That’s how powerful photography can be.

If you haven’t already heard the news, then hopefully this video will share it all. On Monday, our dear friend Jennifer Perillo’s husband died of a sudden heart attack. Jennie is a special force in the food community and is loved by many.

We had a gathering in our garden with friends Brooke, Jen, Gaby, Penny and Rene when we heard of the news.  It was a shock to us all and were left speechless for a long moment of silence. Fortunately we were together to comfort one another in the pain.

Jennie asked that in honor of those we love, to make a Creamy Peanut Butter Pie and share it. This pie was also a favorite of her husband, Mikey. You can read it on her blog.

Michael had something to say again. Previously he shared personal thoughts about cooking and how to not be an asshole, then followed up with a second, eloquent insight on Chef Thomas Keller.

It’s hard not to be fascinated by Ruhlman’s ideas. Whether or not someone shares his views, his thoughts are provoking. We find ourselves drawn into his pensive mind and want to know more.  That is why we teamed up with him to do this video series.

Make sure you head over to Michael’s post to read his extended thoughts on the subject of passion and the dance in the kitchen. It’s hard to say whether the man speaks best or writes best, we love both articulations of his intruiging mind.

Before writing this post I almost stumbled into saying that some of our other pumpkin recipes were boring. But then after reading another’s brilliant post on a completely different non-food topic, I realized this wasn’t accurate. Skilled writers are more than a mere pleasure to read, they make you think. Their words stimulate the mind, help keep us from stumbling through life mindlessly reacting and reaching.

Roger Ebert recently wrote on his blog some thoughts on loneliness. He remarked how he has never felt particularly lonely. Beginning as a child then continuing throughout his growing and mature life, he would embrace time alone, even casting himself into “pleasurable exile.”  This was something which I could deeply relate to.
