Video – Food Photography w/ On Camera Speedlight

February 1, 2010

fried bacon shot at night with speedlight on camera

Adding a few step-by-step pictures of our cooking preparations really help readers visualize the process of the recipe. But at night, it’s almost impossible to get a decent picture of food cooking on the stove top because there just isn’t enough light.

Shooting with speedlights attached to our camera help solve our lighting dilemna and it allows us to get stovetop photographs that are still visually appetizing. Shooting with one speedlight attached to the camera is really simple and only requires one extra piece of lighting equipment.

Ginger Edamame Soybean Soup (Bacon?) & How we took the photograph

January 24, 2010
edamame soybean soup

Two weeks ago we had a mildly hectic week  planning for Food Blogger Camp and prepping for the Multimedia Presentation that we were giving. Normally, there’s a checklist of things to finish up before we head out and at the top of the itinerary is to cease all grocery shopping and eat everything left in the fridge. Being more attentive to eat leftovers and not wasting food has saved us a nice sum of money that went towards building new raised vegetable beds!

Hooray for cutting back on excess and being rewarded with a new garden project. Yippee! More dirt.»

food portrait photography with speedlight tutorials

It is time to focus our tutorials onto lighting and discussing speedlights (or speed lites, small strobes, flash guns, mount on top flashes, eyeball poppers… whatever you like calling them.) Sorry point-and-shooters, unfortunately  a lot of this tutorial won’t be applicable to you unless there is a hot shoe (that cool little flash mount) on your camera.

Let’s start with just using your speedlight mounted on the camera for some simple, basic shots. Slap that bad boy on, point it at your target and fire away.  You now have an amped up version of your built-in pop-up flash.  Woo-hoo!

Super Batteries- PowerEx Rechargable Batteries

December 30, 2009
Thumbnail image for Super Batteries- PowerEx Rechargable Batteries

Anyone who shoots a lot with speedlights know how they eat up batteries. Recently at a DJ event we were shooting, the two of us blew through over 20 AA lithium batteries in one night.  At over $10 a 4 pack, that frickin’ hurts.

However after a recent discovery, our battery woes are over.  Through Joe McNally and his “What’s in the Bag”, we’ve been enlightened to the Powerex 2700 Rechargeable Batteries. These batteries kick some serious speedlight ass.»
