We’re back from a fabulous week in Florida from a visit with our friend Jaden from Steamy Kitchen. We helped her during her cookbook shoot and after eating half the recipes in the book, we’re ten pounds heavier. That’s what happens during a cookbook shoot where the food is real. It’s a tough job, taste testing, but we’re always up for the challenge! Jaden’s cooking is so bright, fresh and flavorful, her new cookbook is sure to be a staple on your cookbook shelf.

The kitchen team consisted of Todd and Jenna where they made sure each ingredient was prepped for camera readiness and prettiness. The studio team was Jaden behind the wheel at the camera and I assisted in prop and food styling. The energy was high and we all started the shoot days with positive attitudes and big appetites.

Hi Friends, how has your 2012 been treating you? We still can’t believe this month is coming to and end. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were wishing a farewell t0 2011 with our Life Recipes video? Maybe that’s what being on the road and being buried in work does to ones grasp of time. But we wouldn’t have it any other way because we feel so lucky to be working with fabulous people and photography projects.

As you can tell, we’ve been a bit absent on recipe sharing over the last few months. We miss being away from our home kitchen and although we haven’t been posting on our home cooked recipes, we’ve certainly been eating really well. Really, really well.

There is always a first time for everything. We’re continually embracing all of our new experiences and searching for new projects to push us further creatively and personally. But for the last 10 years when we had our family portrait and special events studio business, we had always dodged requests to photograph weddings.

The thought of photographing a wedding is just exhausting. We understand the intense amount of work it takes to photograph a wedding well. It’s a huge responsibility to capture the epic day for a newly married couple. That’s why we have an immense amount of respect for all you wedding photographers out there.

Hello Friends, thanks for bearing with our lack of posting during our absence as of late. As some of you know, we took a personal trip to Cuba. This was a much needed trip after a non-stop 8 months of work both in studio and on location. We were due for some personal time and Cuba was the perfect destination to re-fuel our souls both personally and creatively again.

Our cravings for personal travel often take us to parts of the world that always leave us curious and longing for more about their people, culture and history. Cuba was definitely on the top of our list and thanks to some dear friends, we were able to organize a small, intimate culture exchange trip. This amazing trip to the bustling city of Havana and the rural Western slopes of the island left us with a deeper understanding of Cuban culture and passion. We were also working on some personal creative projects here in Cuba, which we’ll be sharing more of soon.

We’re on the road again. Two weeks ago we shot in Austin, TX and in St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN and captured some terrific content. Can’t wait to share those projects with you all soon. This week we’re working on location again. and again. and again. San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. But what makes this week’s work trip so exciting is that we’re road tripping it the whole way from Los Angeles.

My photographic heart always pulses faster when I get an assignment photographing children. I shared my journey about this previously and I thank you all for keeping me company there.

The last 10 years of my career immersed me in the intimacy of family and children’s portraiture. I was allowed into the lives of very personal family moments and cherished gatherings, that for many of these families, often only happen but once in a few years. It was a privilege for me to be a witness to these tender moments with my camera and to be trusted that I could capture the essence of their family story.

Loving my subjects, cherishing their special family moments as if they were my own, and having them trust me to capture all this says so much of why I love what I do.

I wouldn’t be honest to you all if I said that I was doing fine. I hope you don’t mis-understand, life has been treating me very kindly. I have an wonderful and supportive partner, a bubble dog that loves me un-conditionally, a garden of heirloom tomatoes and a growing list of clients that I love photographing with. I’ve been satisfied, content with waking up every day excited about what I hope to accomplish, discover and create.

But over the last 6 weeks, I’ve been feeling a void, a missing piece of the puzzle that kept me awake at night more than normal. My instagram pictures (Diane Cu) were a reflection of how I was feeling during those early hours and many of you reached out to me, comforting me and I thank you deeply for that.

I believe I need to share with you, my friends, an explanation of why I was photographing the way I was. This is all part of my healing.

On Assignment with Penny: Chef Joanne Chang, Myers + Chang

A photographer often dreams of traveling the world to document stories like our friend, food and culture photographer Penny De Los Santos. Geared up with a  camera strapped to her shoulder, a seasoned passport and a heart open to seeing the world in front of her, she travels on magazine assignments making photographs of food, people and the culture that surrounds it.

Each documentary image shuttered from her camera and her heart embodies a sensibility that makes the food story come to life with fierce emotion and visceral beauty.

Penny shares snippets of her work and travels on her blog, but often times the reader is left hungry for more of her food stories and the amazing tapestry of individuals that she photographs.

To share more of her journey and what it’s like to be on assignment, Penny wanted to produce some videos to take her audience alongside her during her travels. When she approached us with this idea and the creative energy between us caught like wildfire. An immediate firestorm of inspiration, ideas, people, stories and locations were hashed out within minutes. And the the most obvious title for the project was “On Assignment with Penny”. Done.

I haven’t taken a personal vacation in years. To be exact, it’s been two years and 9 months. To be even further precise, dramatic (and redundant), it’s been 1,015 days, which feels like a lifetime for me.

Every time Todd and I plan on a vacation, an opportunity arrives at our door step and we accept it, putting our personal vacation aside till next the next month. Our choice to take these gigs over vacation isn’t because it’s about the money, but rather, they’re jobs that will help us grow as photographers, filmmakers and more importantly, as people. We’ll accept the jobs, travel to the location, work our butts off and then make a mini-vacation out of the time that we’re there.

This chaotic workflow has always been satisfying, numbing some of the longing to actually go somewhere for personal, rather than professional reasons. Until recently.  My well has dried out and I’m thirsty, yearning to be replenished on an journey for my own.

Todd and I are now planning our next trip, this time it’ll be a personal trip for us, especially for me.
