Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of belly happy food that put you in a coma for a few hours. What’s a Thanksgiving without the typical surrender shout of “Omg, I ate too much I couldn’t help myself”? Normally every year we’ll indulge and look forward having a few days of extra left overs to nosh on. But this year we were so disciplined about how much we ate that we didn’t even have any left overs. Believe it or not, it’s true.

We spent our holiday up in San Francisco with family and had to drive back on Thanksgiving afternoon back to Los Angeles. So during our Thanksgiving brunch we were careful to not eat ourselves to the point of being comatose because of the impending 7 hour drive back home. We were so “good” about this that we didn’t even have any dessert. Now that’s what you call will power!

It feels so wonderful to be back in the kitchen after being on the road, teaching workshops and shooting on location lately. When we were in the kitchen the other night preparing dinner, we both looked at one another with the same hungry, yet satisfied eyes. It feel so good to be back here in our home kitchen feeding our family and friends. Unfortunately we didn’t take the time to photograph any of it to share with you on the blog!

The garden always look different in the time that we’re away. When we return, one of the first things we do is to explore the backyard for new goodies that dropped, blossomed or got eaten by the squirrels. This week, we were greeted with red pomegranates.

Blackberry Ice Cream Recipe
We wrote this recipe for the sweet/tart-ness of the average blackberry in grocers. If you happen to find exceptional blackberries like the Stehly Farms berries, cut back the sugar to taste. -Tough job testing multiple batches of ice cream, but that is how much we care about people using our recipes . This recipe is adapted from the combined techniques of two of my favorite dessert books, The Perfect Scoop, and The Professional Pastry Chef. Makes about 1 qt.

Know the difference between an average blackberry and a Stehly Organic Farms blackberry? Amazement. Pure eye-rolling amazement. As if Mother Nature herself reached down and handed you a blackberry and said, “Here. This is what a blackberry should be.”

Plump. They have a deep, round sweetness that is counterbalanced perfectly by the classic blackberry tang. But just a subtle tang, not enough to overstay its welcome and overshadow the flavor of the berry.

This consistently cool weather had us apprehensive, particularly as heirloom tomato gardeners. With almost 20 heirloom tomatoes plants that we’ve been nurturing over the last few months, all we were hoping for was some hot sun to get these plants to bolt out with tomatoes.
Pork Belly & Cippollini Onion Focaccia Recipe
The dough keeps easily for a week or so. It will start to develop a little sourdough flavor the longer it sits, but the texture starts to change a bit over time, so you don’t want to store it too long in the fridge. If you don’t have cipollini onions, substitute some thickly sliced sweet onions or shallots instead. Thick bacon will work instead of the pork belly, you just won’t have as much control over the thickness of the pork. Depending on the thickness of your bacon, you probably won’t need to »

Thank you Nancy. Thank you Shirley. Thank you for your hunger for knowledge. For your brilliance. And an exceptionally deep thanks for generosity in sharing and inspiring.

My baking obsession has been once again been roused and it is due to these two phenomenal ladies. The siren’s call to the oven first began about two weeks ago with an article in the LA Times Food. Nancy Silverton, one of LA’s restaurant matriarchs, shared her focaccia insights with one and all.

LA’s bread master wasn’t inspired by pans of focaccia until a few years ago when she experienced the Italian bread in its motherland. Aroused and determined to recreate the love she found in Italy, Nancy did a little culinary PI work in the kitchens of Italy. She came home with magic and began to add to Mozza’s already potent arsenal.

Grilled Artichokes and Stems with Garlic Tarragon Butter
The quality of the artichokes you are able to get will vary time it takes to cook them. Older artichokes are usually tougher and require longer cook times. Cook by feel and testing, rather than times. For this recipe, first you boil them to mostly cook the artichokes, then marinate them, then finish by grilling to give them an extra special “smokey” quality. When boiling, you’ll want the artichokes nearly all the way cooked, as they won’t cook much more on the grill. The step is more for the smokey flavor.
Sauteed Peas with Yuzu Kosho
Yuzu kosho is an amazing Japanese chili salt made with the grated zest of the citrus yuzu. A little goes a long way, so if you can find a bottle, it it well worth the purchase. There is a red yuzu kosho (red chilies) and a green yuzu kosho (green chilies), and either work well with this recipe. To substitute, use a nice sea salt, finely grated fresh lemon zest, and a touch of your favorite chili, maybe a Serrano, Thai chili, or a little bit of Habanero and adjust the quantities of salt, zest, »

Even as Spring rolls into Summer, and most of nature is just beginning to take life and flourish, there are those whose lifespan is spent. In seemingly moments ago, they were thriving and full of life and beauty, bringing us joy everyday. Now we have to let go of them, hoping to have their void in our daily lives filled by another. Forever grateful for the sweetness they shared with us.
