New Workshop: Food Writing for Blogs & Print

We’re proud to be hosting a writing workshop led by Amy Scattergood, a seasoned food editor and writer! Food blogs are exploding on the internet and there are many bloggers who want to be able to hone in on their food writing skills. This small, intimate workshop is the perfect class to learn the tools of the trade & expand on the creative and technical side of food writing. The location is in a photography studio in the arts district of downtown Los Angeles that’s full of creative energy to get those writing juices flowing. It’s guaranteed to be a great evening. Amy Scattergood is the food blog editor at LA Weekly, a former staff writer for the Los Angeles Times food section, and the co-author with Kim Boyce of Good to the Grain, a whole grain baking cookbook published March 2010 from Stewart, Tabori & Chang. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena.

Food Writing for Blogs and Print: Translate What’s on Your Plate

  • In this class, we’ll look at what makes a good food story and consider how voice, content and reporting all contribute to the piece
  • We’ll examine the work of various writers and discuss how different techniques operate.
  • We’ll examine the evolution of the genre from old media stories to food blogs, and see how the style and content have changed.

Topics covered:

  • the importance of reporting
  • the importance of voice and the issue of first person narration
  • how POV has changed with the internet
  • how to write a recipe
  • why food photography is increasingly important
  • how to integrate quotes within stories
  • This class will not require reading material, but will require participation in discussion.
