Apple Spiced Coffee Cake

Before we left for Australia there was a bit more pantry cleaning we needed to do, trying to minimize any produce going to waste. Diane had roasted up the teriyaki glazed brussels sprouts for us to munch on, but there were apples, persimmons, and tons of garden fresh limes which most likely weren’t going to survive the two weeks we’d be gone.

For the persimmons and limes we called in Diane’s parents, as they are always willing to take any of those we have to »

Brussels Sprouts and Bacon Parmesan Pizza

Pizza. Ahh, beautiful pizza. With a thin, bubbly crust which is slightly charred, and topped with a perfect balance of sauce, toppings and cheese. It is something worth obsessing over, and boy do we obsess over pizza.

Pizza is often our source of exploration when we set out to explore a town. Just about anywhere we travel, we’ll attempt to hunt down the area’s best offerings in pizza with the wood-fired tokens of devotion that often satisfy our personal cravings the most. We have been »

Sweet Onion “Crack-Dip” Recipe and Bountiful Dinner with KitchenAid

by White on Rice Couple November 4, 2013
Thumbnail image for Sweet Onion “Crack-Dip” Recipe and Bountiful Dinner with KitchenAid

Stop everything and make this sweet onion dip recipe. Though the recipe is our creation, we can’t take credit for the nickname. It belongs to a little gathering of friends always labels it as “crack dip”. So when it came time to sharing it again in our cookbook, Bountiful, we lovingly added the new name to the final draft. Thankfully, our Abrams editor was open-minded enough to let us coin this term in print because  the nickname really is fitting. And delicious.

Our crack-dip is »

Teriyaki Glazed Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Thumbnail image for Teriyaki Glazed Roasted Brussels Sprouts

A quick dinner before a long trip. That’s what’s been happening over the last 4 days since we’ve returned from New York City and Seattle. We don’t feel like such losers when we minimize food waste, especially when it comes to brussels sprouts. We went through another fridge-clearing session after shooting for two days this week and as always, we’re trying to eat up what we can before we head out again, this time to Australia. Can you believe it? We still can’t believe we’re »

Sigrid’s Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting from The Pioneer Woman

To make a long story short, we triangulated the US in the last seven days from Long Beach, to New York City to Seattle and back to Long Beach. After stumbling off the last flight and back into the house, we found Ree’s new book waiting for us on the dinner table. What a sweet treat to come home to after a week of travel. This made us smile. It wasn’t soon after, we were craving to cook again and before you knew it, we »

Sriracha Roasted Cauliflower Recipe and Signing at OXO in NYC

We love NYC, there’s no doubt that. The city is a beast on its own, but around every corner, there’s a gem of a find. The energy, vibe, food and people keep us awake into the wee hours of the night.  And best of all, OXO headquarters is in NYC and what better way to celebrate the launch of our cookbook than to partner with these wonderful folks.

We’ve always loved their tools. It was years ago that we first found their vegetable swivel peeler »

Breast cancer is a very personal topic for us, as we have had many dear friends and family who have been diagnosed with this deadly disease. One of our aunts is a survivor and the journey through her chemo and healing was challenging in every sense of the word. But it was something that bonded our family closer together and reminded us the value of life and the importance to help bring out awareness.

October is breast cancer awareness month and due to the long »

Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce, On Toast {make this now}

by White on Rice Couple October 21, 2013
Thumbnail image for Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce, On Toast {make this now}

I’ve started to use this phrase {make this now} more often on the blog rather than just in conversation. We’ve all experienced this “omg, this is amazing….” type of revelation for particular dishes. When the sensations hit just right on the tongue or when that “wow” moment hits the palette, I can’t help it but to tell everyone to make this now. Thus, the method to my madness when I say {make this now} because when I’m blown away at at how simple and delicious »

Roasted Broccoli Grilled Cheese and More from Bountiful

Thumbnail image for Roasted Broccoli Grilled Cheese and More from Bountiful

The birth of our Bountiful cookbook wasn’t as painful as we had originally thought. Aside from a few weeks of never ending dirty dishes, the whole journey was creatively liberating and fun. Thanks a million to all you guys and gals and so many nice cooks, bloggers and friends out there who spread the good cheer.

Seeing what everyone is cooking from the book reminds us why we love what we do so much. Those late nights in the kitchen recipe testing, developing, editing, writing »

Apple Cider Waffles & a Video: Colorado Gold

by White on Rice Couple October 17, 2013
Thumbnail image for Apple Cider Waffles & a Video: Colorado Gold

Can’t believe it’s been about three years since we’ve gone apple picking. Normally every October we venture up to the San Ynez Valley to make a day of gigantic-pumpkin searching and apple picking. And when we say gigantic, we really do mean the really huge pumpkins that you can use as a seating stool for two. Yup, we used to like our pumpkins big and our October apples fresh and super crunchy.

But life got the best of us and our yearly tradition of apple »

We’re celebrating a birthday today! Our cookbook, Bountiful, is finally released and we can give a big exhale to the last year and a half of writing, photographing, recipe developing and eating-till-we-drop.

In the cookbook, we actually don’t have any cake recipes, however for this occasion, we made cake.  A lemon bundt cake for Bountiful, our 3.7 pounds and  10.6 x 8.5 x 1.3  inch baby. We learned so much over this process of cookbook-making. First off: don’t try to eat everything you make »

Dill Chicken Pot Pie Galette: a Pie for Fall

by White on Rice Couple October 11, 2013

Sunshine and blue skies filled our whole day today and you’d never know that we had a huge downpour of rain yesterday. Our weather gets a little wacky sometimes, which alternating days of hot & dry Santa Ana winds at ninety hot-degrees, followed by a day of downpour rain and then a day of gorgeous light and sky. For those of you who don’t know of our local So-Cal talk, we all call this yo-yo of days: earthquake weather. That’s right. Earthquake: that common phenomenon »

Pumpkin Spice Coffeecake – Ok, I Give Up, Summer is Over

I can’t take it anymore! I give in and am finally going to embrace the fact that autumn is here.

I’ve been trying to hold out, desperately clinging to summer’s fruit and veggie bounty. Pushing aside any thoughts of pumpkins and other winter squashes, stews, roasts. All of that delicious autumn comfort goodness.

Let’s be honest, there can never be too many kale recipes. No matter how much chatter there is online about there being too many kale recipes, we’ll just add another recipe to the mountain of greens. Just because everyone loves and shares kale chips, it doesn’t mean that there are too many kale recipes. Besides, it was kale chips that was one of the first dishes to get us hooked on this amazing green.

This post is a testament to our unwavering love of kale »

Crispy Fried Brussels Sprouts with Mom’s Chili Fish Sauce

by White on Rice Couple September 30, 2013
Thumbnail image for Crispy Fried Brussels Sprouts with Mom’s Chili Fish Sauce

Finally, I think Mom would approve of this recipe, or at least my hacked version of her chili fish sauce. You see, I’ve been known to break many culinary rules and Mom has pretty much warmed up to my kitchen shenanigans and fiendish ways of using fish sauce. Seriously, who would take a traditional Vietnamese spring roll and make a BLT out of it? I did. She also raised both eye brows when I told her that I made a fried egg Vietnamese sandwich called »

Fly Fishing Vacation and a Lesson in Patience

Thumbnail image for Fly Fishing Vacation and a Lesson in Patience

Hello from Colorado. Actually, from a non-flooded section of the state, in Edwards. Our thoughts have been with all the folks in the flooded communities to our East and the rain today seemed to add to more stress on the area. On this part of the Rockies, the rain this afternoon didn’t make for the best fishing conditions, but we still had a blast. Besides, the last thing we were going to complain about was a little rain and wet rain gear.

Lamingtons: A Special Australian Sponge Cake & A Trip

by White on Rice Couple September 20, 2013
Thumbnail image for Lamingtons: A Special Australian Sponge Cake & A Trip

When we first laid eyes on a lamington, it was like whoa. Double whoa. A sight for sore eyes. How is it that you can ignore a wonderfully tender sponge cake (sometimes butter or pound cake), dipped in chocolate and covered with shredded coconut? You can’t and you shouldn’t. If a lamington was filled with creme or jam, would it convince you that this is certainly one of the most beautifully executed desserts in the world? It didn’t take long to convince us and rush »

Summer hasn’t left yet and we’re still squeezing out the best of the season, or what’s still left of it before all the pumpkins arrive. Speaking of pumpkins, have you seen all the new pumpkin recipes out there? Pinterest is inundated with them and we’re still boycotting anything that has to do with holiday-ish or fall-ish dishes. Goodness, it’ll still be a while before you see us posting pumpkins. Or at least a few weeks.  Or until we run out of corn at the markets!»

iphone of our newest obsession

We’ve been secretly sneaking these in during our daily market stops. So we just have to share.

This sweet treat, another junk food confession, has saved our lives over the past two weeks. With a surprise spike in last Summer heat, everyone’s been whining and crying about how this 95 degree weather is melting our spirits. But not us. You know why? We’ve been fueling our sweaty days with this favorite sweet treat called italian ice and custard.
